Physical Safety
- Teach your child to recognize the different body language pets use to warn others.
- Train your pet to recognize the command “Stop”, while also practicing with your child.
- Don’t allow other pets in your house without adult Supervision.
- Teach methods to protect from an overexcited pet. Examples include calling for help, rolling around, and protecting the face with hands.
Toy Safety
- Avoid having balloons around the house. Your pet may be frightened by the popping noise or choke on if swallowed.
- This may seem hard but avoid having small children toys lying around. Small toys are easily swallowed, which can be dangerous to the pet.
Mutual Respect
- Designate a pet’s bed, crate or sleeping area as a pet “safe spot” and teach your child to leave them alone.
- Play time with pets is mutual. Inform you child that the right to end a play session is mutual.
General Rules
- When organizing a playful event with your family and pet maintain a positive, controlled interaction. Excited pets may alarm your child and also the other way around.
- Teach your child that using rewards will help get your pet to listen.
- If either, your child or pet gets overexcited during play, it’s a good idea to take a brief break to calm everyone down.
