Below is a list of some of our great presidents and the furry friends that roamed the halls of the famous White House.
George Washington:
During his time as president he kept an abundance of animals including 8
horses, 12 hounds, 5 French hounds, and a parrot.
John Quincy Adams:
Marquis de Lafayette, a French military officer, gave President Adam’s an
alligator as a gift.
Abraham Lincoln:
President Lincoln’s love for pets is well documented. His entourage of presidential animals included
a pig named Fido, a white rabbit named Willy, two goats named Nanko and Nanny,
and a turkey named Jack. The collection
also included several ponies, cats and dogs.
Theodore Roosevelt:
President Roosevelt topped all other presidents by basically having a
zoo at the White House. The collection
included 5 dogs, 2 cats, 13 horses, 5 bears, 5 guinea pigs, 3 parrots, badger,
lion, hyena, wildcat, coyote, zebra, owl, snakes, lizards, rats, roosters, and
a raccoon.
Bill Clinton:
During President Clinton’s eight years in office, the White House was
occupied by a cat, Socks, and a dog, Buddy.
There was a rumor that Socks and Buddy didn’t get along.
