Iceberg Straight Ahead! --An All White Killer Whale

Russian scientists are set out to embark on a journey to find out more information on the only all-white, adult killer whale ever spotted in the North Pacific. They have named the whale Iceberg!

Researchers from the university of Moscow and Saint Petersburg first spotted the approximately 6 foot dorsal fin back in August. 

The researchers have chosen to hold back on releasing photos of Iceberg until they are able to better study the whale!

Disease Precautions for Outdoor Enthusiasts and Your Pet Companions

There are several disease precautions that outdoor enthusiasts and their pet companions should take into consideration before their next camping, hiking, kayaking or backpacking trip this summer!  The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) has compiled a list of safety precautions that should be taken when enjoying the outdoors.

Many people's biggest concern about being outdoors in nature is getting attacked by an animal, or suffering from a physical injury. Keep you and your pet safe by mapping out  your trail, and keep a close watch on your surroundings.

Although physical injuries are serious issues, another risk for you and your pet companion are infectious diseases. You and your pet are at a higher risk for this from under-prepared food or contaminated water. There is also the possibility of transmitting infectious diseases through insects such as mosquito's, ticks, fleas and/or mites.

Be sure to take the proper precautions for you and your pet before setting out and about into nature this summer!

Does Your Dog Wear a Seatbelt?

Many experts believe that if you’re going to have your pets in the car, they need seatbelts too! When pet owner Leslie may was traveling with her two pets and the cars in front of her quickly came to a dead stop, Leslie feared if she slammed on her breaks someone would rear-end  her. She worried her pets would be seriously injured if this was to occur.

Leslie proceeded to collide with the car in front of her, but she and her dogs luckily left the accident unscathed. Had her dogs not been buckled in, the outcome could’ve been much worse.

With a steady increase in pet owners traveling with their pets, it is important to spread the word about restraining pets when traveling.

Abandoned 10-ft Albino Python Captured!

Recently, a 10-foot albino python was captured in the woods at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. The python was abandoned by its pet owner who released it into the wild, but had no idea the impact releasing this snake into the woods could do to the environment. 

For years, people have been letting their unwanted pets go into the woods at Land Between the Lakes and surrounding areas. There have been numerous sightings of wild dogs and house cats turned wild that have led to the declining number of bob white quails.

Some people also release their animals into the wilderness because they are infected with diseases or rabies that go on and threaten other livestock out there.

Think twice before letting your pet or any animal free into the wild! Not only will they be in danger, but many other animals will be as well! 



There are numerous adoption agencies, and plenty of people looking to take an animal in. There is no need to let them go in the wild!

Expecting a Baby? Prepare your Home & Pet for the New Addition!

When families are expecting a new baby, often times they have to prepare their homes and make many changes to accommodate their new little one. A baby changes your world and environment, along with your pets! 

After bringing home a new baby, there are many new smells, scents, sounds and routines that can cause some anxiety and behavior changes for your pet. You need to gradually introduce baby-related items to your pets!

Start by using baby powder and lotions to allow your pet to get used to the new scent. Also, play CD’s or online recordings of baby sounds to familiarize your pet with what they soon will be hearing around the house. Some suggest placing the baby’s car sear and toys around the house so your pets can investigate these items. Also, before bringing the baby home, you may want to bring home an article of the baby’s clothing that they’ve already worn and let your pet get familiar with the baby’s scent.

It is also important that pet owners don’t scold or strike their pets around or near the baby. This allows for the pet to associate bad or negative feelings with the new baby. As a safety precaution, parents shouldn’t leave their baby alone in the same room with your pet.

Dog Parks: Read the Rules & Regulations FIRST!

Dog parks are great places where pet owners and families can bring pups for both exercise and socialization! Upon arriving to the park, make sure to read the rules and regulations posted. These rules are posted for one good reason, to protect and ensure the safety of you and your canine companion!

Many people ignore these rules and it can result in an injury for you and your pet, or simply just ruining the fun for the others at the park. There are usually park police that regulate any kind of situations that may arise, but it is easier for everyone if the rules are followed.

As well as abiding by the posted rules, have some common courtesy for the others around you. Although it is a dog park, that is no invitation to let your pets run around wild. Control your pets and keep a close eye on them to avoid any sort of disaster!
