ALLPET.COM

Many people often call animal shelters or veterinarian offices when they notice cats roaming freely in their neighborhoods for quite some time. However, sometimes cats that you may see around the neighborhood could be someone’s outdoor pet cat.

Here are a couple of tips to follow if you happen to find a stray cat, courtesy of mercurynews.com!
  • Before taking the cat to any shelter/vets office, check with your neighbors to see if the cat belongs to them or anyone they may know
  • If not, make a couple of posters that include a photo of the cat with a description of where you had last seen it and your contact information
  • Post fliers and posters around town to get the word out

ALLPET.COM

No matter what part of the country you live in, at some point or another you may have to prepare your home, family, and pets for a disaster or emergency.

Here are a few tips, courtesy of mnn.com to help kick-start your emergency plans for your pet!

Create an emergency contact list: Start with your family and friends who live the closest to you and can get to your pets quickest. Make sure the individuals on your emergency contact list have access to your home.

Make an emergency kit:  Fill a backpack or bag with at least two weeks’ worth of food for your pet and a gallon of water for each day. Have the bag ready to go at all times.

Practice makes perfect: Pick a time to rehearse your emergency plan.

Invest in sturdy pet carriers: No matter where you plan to bring your pet in case of an emergency, it will need a safe place to stay. Make sure the carrier you choose is comfortable for pet with enough space for food and water bowls.

Stock the basics in an emergency bag: Include a leash, a collar with identification information and a harness and muzzle.

Carry copies of documentation: Place all important information about your pet’s vital information in a waterproof container.

Carry photos that show you with your pet: If you’re going to keep your pet at an emergency facility, bring a couple of pictures of you and your pet together to alleviate any confusion at the time of pickup.

Don’t wait for a warning: Act now! Prepare for an emergency beforehand so you’re certain everything is in order.

A Couple of Tips on How to Handle a Dog Fight!

ALLPET.COM

877-687-3601/www.AllPet.com

Has your dog ever gotten into a fight with another dog passing by? If so, it was probably an extremely scary time for both you and your pet.

You may be wondering if there’s anything you can do when dogs begin to fight. Can you control it? Can you stop it? Also, what do you do if it appears that one or both dogs are injured?

Here are some tips on how to handle a dog fight, courtesy of Dr. Jenna Arnaiz, an Emergency Room Vet from Seattle.

First, if a fight has already begun, keep all bystanders away from the scene of the fight. Call your dog off with a commanding voice. Use a leash to pull the dogs apart (this is why it's important to have a good, strong leash). If your dog tends to be more aggressive than others, a head collar or trailing leash may work better.

Next, try using a physical barrier such as a blanket, to separate them. DO NOT attempt to pull the dogs apart by reaching into the fight or holding on to one of the dog’s bodies or collars. This could result in someone getting seriously injured.

After the fight breaks up, each dog involved should be seen by their vet, especially if you notice any wounds or limping. Some injuries are often hidden and may not be seen for a couple of days.

Factors to Consider Before Adopting a Pet!

ALLPET.COM

Have you been thinking about adopting a pet? If you have, there are many variables to consider in making sure that the timing is absolutely perfect. You want to make your pet adoption decision a successful and lifelong decision! You never want your new pet companion to end up back at the shelter.

If you think it may be time to adopt a pet for your family, make sure you’ve done all your research. There are millions of pets out there who are waiting to be adopted and need a new home!

So, when making your decision take into consideration any major life changes that you might be facing in the near future. Are you planning on moving? Are you going to be having any more children soon? Are you starting a new job that will require you to put in extra hours? These are all factors you need to consider before adopting a pet.

Another factor to consider is your living arrangements. If you are a homeowner, adopting a pet should be no problem. However, if you rent, your landlord may not allow pets in your unit or their might be restrictions. Be sure to check with them before adopting any new pets. Also, the size of your home or apartment will play a huge role in the size and/or kind of pet you can adopt.

The next factor to consider is your finances. Pets require yearly vaccinations, veterinarian office visits, food, bedding, toys, grooming and medication. If you will not be able to provide these things for your pet, you may want to hold off on the adoption process.

Steps to Help You Train Your Pet!

ALLPET.COM

877-687-3601/www.AllPet.com

If you’re a parent to a pet, you probably had to spend the first couple of weeks training your pet within your home. Training your pet is a bonding experience for both the pet and his/her owner. It also makes your pet more enjoyable to be around and to have them living in your home!

There are five basic commands that all dogs should be taught. These include sit, down, stay, heel and come. Here are a couple of tips from animalplanet.com on how to train your canine companion in these five basic commands!

Sit
  • Hold the treat directly above the dog's head.
  • When the dog's eyes follow the food, his head will tilt back and his hind legs will begin to fold under him to offset his body position, causing him to sit naturally.
  • As the dog's back legs begin to bend, say: "Sit."
  • When the dog fully sits, give him the treat.
  • Once the sit command is understood, reduce and then eliminate the food reward, always praising the dog as he sits obediently.

Down
  • While the dog is in the "sit" position, hold a treat near its nose and move the treat downward.
  • As his nose follows the treat, move your hand forward in front of his face.
  • As he starts to lower himself, give the command: "Down."
  • Move your hand farther down and forward until the dog is fully lying down.
  • Immediately praise him with: "Good, down!"
  • Reward him with the treat.

Stay
  • During early training for "stay," you should use a short leash so the dog is aware of your control.
  • With the dog in the "sit" position say, "Stay" and with your palm facing the dog to reinforce the "stay" command, move a small step away while maintaining eye contact.
  • After a brief pause, reward the dog with praise and a food treat for remaining in position.
  • Don't be too effusive in praise or say his name, as he will probably break his stay to come to you.
  • Repeat the exercise, gradually increasing the length of the pause.
  • If the dog breaks the stay, make him sit and repeat the exercise with a shorter pause before giving the treat.
  • Once the dog masters this, use a longer, slack leash to maintain control and gradually move farther away as the dog remains in the "stay" position.
  •

Come
  • The dog should know how to sit and stay.
  • Move away, turn to face the dog, call him and while motioning with palm inward, say "Come."
  • When the dog reaches you, command the dog to sit, and then give him his food reward.

Heel
  • With the leashed dog in the "sit" position on your left side, hold the treat in your right hand.
  • Say the dog's name, followed by, "Heel."
  • Walk, left foot first, holding the treat just over the dog's nose and doling out little bits to encourage him.
  • Keep the dog on a tight leash.
  • Ideally, your dog should pace himself so that his shoulder is in line with your left knee.
  • Reward him with larger treats when he does this.

Have You Ever Wondered How Horses Get Overseas for the Olympics?

ALLPET.COM

877-687-3601/www.AllPet.com

Have you been watching the Olympics? If you are one of the many people out there who have ben tuning into the games every day, you may have seen Olympians competing in equestrian. Did you ever stop and think how did these athletes get their horses overseas to London for the 2012 game?!

FedEx and many other specialists helped transport all of the equine athletes to the Olympic Games! Did you know they even have passports! All of the horses who are competing in the games must take off from Newark International Airport in New Jersey. At Newark, the horses are loaded onto specialized jet stalls, which look similar to horse trailers you’d see on the highway. There are two horses per stall and they are provided with hay and water and someone looking after them for the entire trip overseas.

Horses are animals that are used to traveling, however, they are still accompanied by groomers and veterinarians that know them extremely well to ensure the best possible care. All of the horses that travel overseas for the Olympics must be approved for travel by the U.S. Department of Agriculture before leaving.

Tips to Follow If Your Pet is Poisoned!

ALLPET.COM

877-687-3601/www.AllPet.com

Has your pet ever been poisoned? If you’ve ever had to experience this with your pet, it more than likely wasn't a pleasant experience. Often times it can be an extremely scary and stressful situation!

If you think your pet is poisoned your best bet is to call your vet as soon as possible and if possible bring a stool sample along with you to the vets office. Also, the ASPCA recommends putting together an emergency first-aid kit for your bed to have readily available that you can use after calling the vet!

The ASPCA reports that the first-aid kit should contain:
  • A fresh bottle of hydrogen peroxide, 3 percent USP (to induce vomiting)
  • A turkey baster, bulb syringe or large medicine syringe (to administer peroxide)
  • Saline eye solution
  • Artificial tear gel (to lubricate eyes after flushing)
  • Mild grease-cutting dish washing liquid (for bathing an animal after skin contamination)
  • Forceps (to remove stingers)
  • A muzzle (to protect against fear- or excitement-induced biting)
  • A can of your pet's favorite wet food
  • A pet carrier
