Even though animals have a coat of fur, when it’s cold and wintry out pets get cold!  It’s very important as pet owners to understand the responsibilities you have in keeping your pets warm and cozy!

Susan Nelson, a clinical associate professor and veterinarian at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Pet Health Center put it simply, “A general rule of thumb is if it is too cold for you outside, it is too cold for your dog.”

Nelson went on to say how diversity among dogs impacts how they endure the cold weather differently, “Small Stature and short coats, such as with a Chihuahua, make dogs less tolerant of cold weather.  Some of these dogs may not even tolerate cooler temperatures that are still above freezing for very long.”  Nelson added, “Larger body mass and longer, plusher coats allow dogs to tolerate lower temperatures for longer duration's –think Siberian husky.”

Another way to help pets get used to the cold is gradually exposing them to colder temperatures.  This will allow for the animal to gradually grow their winter fur coat.

Animal boots, sweaters and jackets can provide another added protection between your pet and the cold climate.  All Pet has the items in stock now to help provide your furry friend relief from the cold!  Visit our website AllPet.com and check out all the pet supplies we have to make you and your pet a happy camper this winter!
