Has your
dog ever gotten into a fight with another dog passing by? If so, it was
probably an extremely scary time for both you and your pet.
You may be
wondering if there’s anything you can do when dogs begin to fight. Can you control
it? Can you stop it? Also, what do you do if it appears that one or both dogs
are injured?
Here are some tips on how to handle a dog fight, courtesy of Dr. Jenna Arnaiz, an Emergency Room Vet from Seattle.
First, if a
fight has already begun, keep all bystanders away from the scene of the fight.
Call your dog off with a commanding voice. Use a leash to pull the dogs apart (this is why it's important to have a good, strong leash). If your dog tends to be more
aggressive than others, a head collar or trailing leash may work better.
Next, try
using a physical barrier such as a blanket, to separate
them. DO NOT attempt to pull the dogs apart by reaching into the fight or
holding on to one of the dog’s bodies or collars. This could result in someone
getting seriously injured.
After the
fight breaks up, each dog involved should be seen by their vet, especially if you
notice any wounds or limping. Some injuries are often hidden and may not be
seen for a couple of days.
