October is National Pet Wellness Month, this is a great time to remind pet owner of the benefits of preventive care.  Preventive care is the easiest way to ensure that your pet lives a longer healthier life.  The American Veterinary Medical Association is sponsoring the National Pet Wellness Month as a campaign to educate the American public on better ways to keep their pets healthy.  Dr. Barry Kellogg, the senior veterinary adviser for Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, offers pet owners the following tips to help care for your pet’s responsibility. 

Every pet should visit a veterinarian at least once a year.  Annual exams are a great opportunity to check on the overall health of your pet, while also reviewing vaccination status and program that are most appropriate for each individual pet.  Spaying and neutering can prevent many complications in a pet’s health, as well as curb the overpopulation pets reducing the amount of unwanted pets.  These procedures can be performed as early as 8-12 weeks of age.  Keeping your pet healthy starts with maintaining there weight.  It has been determined that 53% of dogs and 55% of cats are overweight, and prevention is much easier than loosing the weight in the long run.  A balanced diet can be easily maintained through commercial packaged pet foods.  

It can be hard for pets to chew and digest food if dental care is not maintained.  It can also lead to kidney problems especially in older animals, you can help by feeding them quality proteins and avoiding red meats also increase the water intake.  This will decrease the workload on the kidneys and help prevent diseases and health issues.

National Pet Wellness Month is meant to educate and spread the word about preventative care for your pets.  It is easier to take steps to avoid complications with your pet’s health, than it is to try to cure these problems after they occur.  You can use these tips to help you pet live a long, healthy and happy life.

Seven years ago, Sue Subkow, a dog lover, set up a Halloween party for a group of fifteen dogs.  Half of the dogs were dressed up and half were not. A year later the size doubled and Subkow started handing out awards for the best costumes.  Today this Halloween party for dogs now consists have over a thousand dogs and about eighty of them dress up for the occasion!

Over the past several years, the popularity for dog Halloween costumes has risen.  In 2010, the American Pet Products Association said that nine percent of dog owners have purchased a Halloween costume for their dog.  Subkow isn't the only person who arranges Halloween gatherings for dogs and their owners.  In Highland Virginia, people gather with the local fire fighters from station 19 to throw a pet Halloween party.  

The fire fighters use it as an easy way to get involved with the community and build relationships with the citizens they protect.  The real allure of this party is gathering with other enthusiastic pet owners that understand the bond you share with you pet.  It is also a fun way to get kids together and participate in activities with their pets and friends.

Take Sensible Precautions As a Pet Owner!

A common concern for many people while considering purchasing a pet to bring into their home is the possibility that this animal could get their family sick. It’s true that animals do carry germs that can spread to adults and children. Children under the age 5 are typically more susceptible.  This is a reason to be more cautious with animals, not a reason to not have a pet!   

There are some common germs that we can take conscious steps to avoid.  Streptococcus is a form of bacteria that causes strep throat and skin infections. Your pet can carry ticks that cause Lyme disease; these ticks can hop from your pet to you and put you in risk.  Salmonella, Campylobacter  e. Coli, Giardia and Cryptosporidium can spread through anything contaminated with an infected pets stool.  Toxoplasma is a germ found in cat stool, that can affect the brain and eyes in infants, and a pregnant mother can pass these effects to her unborn child.  Worms, which can also be spread through contact with infected stool, can cause fever, rash, allergic reactions, eye, liver and lung disease, and brain infections.  Finally rabies, which is usually found in wild animals, can also affect your pet and can be transmitted to humans through scratches and bites.  Now all these disease and germs can seem overwhelming, but they can all be avoided quite easily. 

To prevent getting an illness from your pet, take new pets to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Take them back to the vet regularly for checkups and shots. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning their stool.  Clean litter boxes daily and never let your children play where your pet goes to the bathroom.  Also eating raw meat or drinking from the toilet is very unhealthy and unsanitary. 

This all seems like a lot of work and a lot to remember, but once you get into a routine its is very simple.  The reward is much more than the slim risk you take when adopting a pet.  Pets make wonderful playmates for children! They keep them physically active and teach them responsibility! 

Tips for Traveling with your Pet!

So I hear that you are planning a trip to Hawaii with your bull dog Broody but are a little nervous about how it will affect Broody. Obviously you haven’t taken him on an airplane and your fears are understandable. But trust me, with the tips that I have for travelling with your pet, the trip to Hawaii will be all sun and play!

Although you may be aware of this, it is very important to do a few things before you buy your airline tickets.  Ask the airline about their policy on carrying pets aboard with you and in case you cannot what are the restrictions on transporting your pet below the cabin. Take a moment to ask if they have any special health & immunization requirements. Finally don’t forget to inquire about pet carrier dimensions, specifications and additional requirements.

It is time for you now to take Broody to the vet. We want to ensure that he is strong enough to handle the travel in his carrier and possibly away from you. Your vet will be able to tell you if his breed is capable of being on a flight. On approval ask the vet to issue a health certificate for your pet which should within ten days of your departure.

At this point you will have ironed out all the requisites in order to purchase that airline ticket and start planning the trip. Try to select non-peak, direct flights which means less passengers, more space and avoidance of unnecessary stress for both you and beloved Broody. Select an airline that can regulate temperature extremes to make your pet comfortable below cabin.

Finally here are some little tips that will dispel that nervousness and make your pet’s trip safe and stress free:

• Try to be on the same flight as your pet. Plus notify the airline crew that your pet is on the flight for precautionary measures and ask if you can watch him/her get loaded/unloaded below the cabin.
• Try to be early for the flight so that the unnecessary stress of rushing can be avoided. If you are calm, Broody will be calm too.
• Get the pet carrier in advance. This way your pet will get familiar with the carrier. You could include a personal item in there that will make it easier for him/her. Also label the carrier with your information, address, destination country and contact details
• Don’t forget to trim Broody’s nails so that they don’t get caught anywhere. Ensure that his collar has all your contact details.
• Finally bring Broody’s photo and a leash on you
• Oops sorry, one last thing don’t feed him for four to six hours before the flight. A little water can be given and you could add a few ice cubes in a collapsible travel bowl secured within his carrier.

Now that you have all this down, I promise you that both you and Broody will become seasoned travelers in no time. Dogs have long been known as "a man’s best friend". One particular marine has three best friends!  As seen in a YouTube video, an unidentified U.S. soldier is greeted by a trio of his four legged best friends, after returning home from a two month training session. 

His three dogs were overwhelmed with excitement and love for their absent owner, as they came barreling through the back door of his house!  The two larger dogs immediately jumped onto the soldier’s lap while the smaller dog ran frantic circles around its owner’s feet in a frenzy of excitement.  

This isn’t the first heartwarming video displaying the pure affection and connection between a returning soldier and his dogs. Check out the video for yourself below!

The saying is definitely true; a dog really is a man’s best friend!

Changes Being Made at Six Flags Wild Safari!

If you’ve ever attended the Six FlagsWild Safari in Jackson, N.J., next year you’ll be in for something new! Beginning next year, the Wild Safari drive-through park will be the Six Flags Safari Off Road Adventure. It will also be combined with Six Flags Great Adventure Theme Park.

This will be the first year that individuals who want to visit both Great Adventure and the Wild Safari will pay one price for both parks. Before this year, the two were kept separate and there was individual admission for both.

Park visitors will no longer be able to drive their own vehicles thru the safari. Next season, all visitors will be driven in a large, off-road vehicle by skilled and informed drivers who will drive the guests thru the attraction and get them as close to the animals as possible! Six Flags will also be offering a zip line across the park which allows visitors to zip above the animals for an additional fee.

A Couple of Tips on How to Handle a Dog Fight!

Has your dog ever gotten into a fight with another dog passing by? If so, it was probably an extremely scary time for both you and your pet.

You may be wondering if there’s anything you can do when dogs begin to fight. Can you control it? Can you stop it? Also, what do you do if it appears that one or both dogs are injured?

Here are some tips on how to handle a dog fight, courtesy of Dr. Jenna Arnaiz, an Emergency Room Vet from Seattle.

First, if a fight has already begun, keep all bystanders away from the scene of the fight. Call your dog off with a commanding voice. Use a leash to pull the dogs apart (this is why it's important to have a good, strong leash). If your dog tends to be more aggressive than others, a head collar or trailing leash may work better.

Next, try using a physical barrier such as a blanket, to separate them. DO NOT attempt to pull the dogs apart by reaching into the fight or holding on to one of the dog’s bodies or collars. This could result in someone getting seriously injured.

After the fight breaks up, each dog involved should be seen by their vet, especially if you notice any wounds or limping. Some injuries are often hidden and may not be seen for a couple of days.

Steps to Help You Train Your Pet!

If you’re a parent to a pet, you probably had to spend the first couple of weeks training your pet within your home. Training your pet is a bonding experience for both the pet and his/her owner. It also makes your pet more enjoyable to be around and to have them living in your home!

There are five basic commands that all dogs should be taught. These include sit, down, stay, heel and come. Here are a couple of tips from animalplanet.com on how to train your canine companion in these five basic commands!

Sit

• Hold the treat directly above the dog's head.
• When the dog's eyes follow the food, his head will tilt back and his hind legs will begin to fold under him to offset his body position, causing him to sit naturally.
• As the dog's back legs begin to bend, say: "Sit."
• When the dog fully sits, give him the treat.
• Once the sit command is understood, reduce and then eliminate the food reward, always praising the dog as he sits obediently.

Down

• While the dog is in the "sit" position, hold a treat near its nose and move the treat downward.
• As his nose follows the treat, move your hand forward in front of his face.
• As he starts to lower himself, give the command: "Down."
• Move your hand farther down and forward until the dog is fully lying down.
• Immediately praise him with: "Good, down!"
• Reward him with the treat. 

Stay

• During early training for "stay," you should use a short leash so the dog is aware of your control.
• With the dog in the "sit" position say, "Stay" and with your palm facing the dog to reinforce the "stay" command, move a small step away while maintaining eye contact.
• After a brief pause, reward the dog with praise and a food treat for remaining in position.
• Don't be too effusive in praise or say his name, as he will probably break his stay to come to you.
• Repeat the exercise, gradually increasing the length of the pause.
• If the dog breaks the stay, make him sit and repeat the exercise with a shorter pause before giving the treat.
• Once the dog masters this, use a longer, slack leash to maintain control and gradually move farther away as the dog remains in the "stay" position.
•  

Come

• The dog should know how to sit and stay.
• Move away, turn to face the dog, call him and while motioning with palm inward, say "Come."
• When the dog reaches you, command the dog to sit, and then give him his food reward.

Heel

• With the leashed dog in the "sit" position on your left side, hold the treat in your right hand.
• Say the dog's name, followed by, "Heel."
• Walk, left foot first, holding the treat just over the dog's nose and doling out little bits to encourage him.
• Keep the dog on a tight leash.
• Ideally, your dog should pace himself so that his shoulder is in line with your left knee.
• Reward him with larger treats when he does this.

Have You Ever Wondered How Horses Get Overseas for the Olympics?

Have you been watching the Olympics? If you are one of the many people out there who have ben tuning into the games every day, you may have seen Olympians competing in equestrian. Did you ever stop and think how did these athletes get their horses overseas to London for the 2012 game?!

FedEx and many other specialists helped transport all of the equine athletes to the Olympic Games! Did you know they even have passports! All of the horses who are competing in the games must take off from Newark International Airport in New Jersey. At Newark, the horses are loaded onto specialized jet stalls, which look similar to horse trailers you’d see on the highway. There are two horses per stall and they are provided with hay and water and someone looking after them for the entire trip overseas.

Horses are animals that are used to traveling, however, they are still accompanied by groomers and veterinarians that know them extremely well to ensure the best possible care. All of the horses that travel overseas for the Olympics must be approved for travel by the U.S. Department of Agriculture before leaving.
