Many large luxurious hotel groups including Fairmont and Kimpton, and properties such as DoubleTree by Hilton, are taking notice of those travelers who choose to bring their pets along on vacations and are now offering pet-related amenities to gain their business.

The pet industry is booming and has enjoyed a 5% increase for the past five years!  According to the American Pet Products Association, the industry is estimated to hit $53 billion this year.

The American Pet Products Association also reported that in its 2011-2012 Pet Owners Survey, the group reported that 10.6 million dog owners had taken their pet on a vacation with them within the previous month. Also, 23% of owners are willing to travel with their dog for more than 2 nights, compared to the 21% reported in 2008 and the 19% reported in 2006.

Several states are trying to put a ban on the practice of those pet lovers who like to drive with their pets sitting on their laps! Many believe that pets can easily interfere with the driver’s ability to drive and focus on the road, which can turn into a terrible accident, even fatalities.

Recently a bill was vetoed in California called the AB 2233. The bill would’ve fined motorists $35 for sharing the driver seat with their pets. Even though this isn’t technically considered a crime, it isn’t something that the California Highway Patrol approves.

Several individuals feel that driving with a pet on your lap is just as dangerous as texting and driving, talking on the phone while driving, eating, or trying to put on makeup.

Winter weight gain is a huge issue for pets! There are a couple of reasons why pets tend to get flabby over those cold winter months. First, pets don’t exercise and get outside as often in the winter. Pets may be indulging in more in-between meal snacks. If your cat or small dog gains even two pounds, it may not sound like a significant amount but that is a 20% weight increase! About half of all pets are obese or overweight which leads to many health issues including diabetes and arthritis. To shape up your pets health this spring, ease your pet into some exercise.

It is important to protect your pet from fleas and ticks. With so many products to choose from, it’s often hard to decide. Try not to make any impulse purchases based on price or marketing because it may not benefit you or your pet in the long run. Consult your veterinarian for the product that is best suited for your type of pet.

Next, it’s time for the big shed! Giving your pet the “big shed” now requires more brushing and grooming. The more you brush your pets, the less you vacuum!

NC Study Finds Taking Your Dog To Work Improves Stress Levels

A new study found that “allowing employees to bring their dogs to work appears to reduce stress and boost job satisfaction levels,” (NewsChannel5.com). 

According to the article published by NewsChannel5.com, the study was conducted at a service-manufacturing-retail company in Greensboro, NC, which has about 550 employees and allows up to 30 pet dogs on company premises each day.

“Over the course of a week, Virginia Commonwealth University researchers compared stress levels and job satisfaction among those employees who brought their dogs to work, those who didn’t bring their dogs to work, and employees without pets,” (NewsChannel5.com). The study found that “dogs in the workplace seemed to help reduce job-related stress for their owners and make work more satisfying for other employees who came into contact with the dogs.
