You may have realized that your pets have kept you cool, calm and collected through the turbulent times of the Great Recession, so treat them well and take them to the vet!

Data shows that the pet population has been steadily increasing since 2007, but visits to the veterinarian have declined at a rapid pace (webmd.com). In the last five years, dogs and cats’ annual check-ups have lowered to an unacceptable median, which is leading to preventable diseases (webmd.com).

For example, veterinarians are noticing that overweight pets are owned by overweight owners. Weigh your pets weekly and give them diet-friendly food to make sure they’re not riding a dangerous road toward obesity- it can lead to an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, respiratory problems, bladder disease and diabetes (webmd.com).

Another instance of medical dismissiveness is toward dental care. Many owners are concerned with general anesthesia in regards to their cats and dogs (webmd.com). It is popularly known that animals cannot eat a full day before given general anesthesia, and it’s difficult to see your furry companion suffering. However, your pets will most likely suffer more from the diseases that you have been unwilling to tackle.
